What is a Ballistic Separator and what is it used for?

A ballistic separator agitates material over inclined, oscillating paddles. Heavy, rolling items (bottles, rigid plastics) roll downward while light, flat items (film, paper) are carried upward; holes in the paddles screen out the fine fraction. In this way, a single machine performs 2D/3D separation and screening.

Advantages

  • Simultaneous 2D/3D separation and screening
  • High separation efficiency with mixed waste
  • Few moving parts, low maintenance
  • Adjustable incline and screen

Applications

  • Sorting of mixed packaging and municipal waste
  • Separation of film and rigid plastic
  • Pre-sorting in recycling plants

Position in the line

The ballistic separator works at the pre-sorting stage of the line; it separates flat (2D) materials such as film and sheet from bulky (3D) materials such as bottles and containers, and from fine dust. Together with screening units such as the star screen and the zig-zag separator, it classifies the material flow.

About this page

What is a Ballistic Separator used for?
With inclined, oscillating paddles it separates material into heavy/rolling (3D) and light/flat (2D) fractions and also screens out the fines.
What does a ballistic separator separate?
It separates material into rolling/heavy (3D) and flat/light (2D) fractions; at the same time, it removes the fine fraction through the screen holes.
