Friction Washers

A high-speed rotor rubs flakes against one another and the body to strip surface dirt, labels and adhesive while removing water at the same time.

Friction Washers

What is a Friction Washer and what is it used for?

The friction washer spins flakes at high speed to both clean surface dirt and label residue through mechanical friction and throw off a large share of the water. It serves as both an intensive washing and a pre-drying stage. It is offered in horizontal and 35D (vertical) types.

Advantages

  • Effective cleaning of surface dirt, labels and adhesive
  • Simultaneous washing and dewatering
  • High rotor speed, high cleaning efficiency
  • Robust and wear-resistant construction

Applications

  • PET bottle and hot washing lines
  • Film and rigid plastic washing
  • Removal of label and adhesive residue

How does it work?

In the friction washer, flakes rub both against one another and against the perforated body between the paddles on the high-speed rotor. This intensive mechanical action tears off and cleans away surface dirt, labels and adhesive residue; together with the added water, the released dirt is discharged out through the perforated body. The high speed also flings off most of the water on the flake surface, so the material leaves the machine noticeably dewatered. For this reason the friction washer takes on both intensive washing and pre-drying duties together and reduces the load on the drying stage.

Horizontal or 35D (vertical)?

The horizontal friction washer, thanks to its long horizontal body, offers a longer contact time and high washing efficiency; it requires a relatively larger footprint. The 35D (vertical/inclined) friction washer, with its compact layout, provides intensive washing and dewatering in a limited space. Which type is suitable is determined according to the available space, line flow and the targeted degree of cleaning. Both types are used in PET, film and rigid plastic washing lines, mostly positioned together with the hot washing and rinsing stages.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Friction Washers

What does a Friction Washer do?
A high-speed rotor rubs flakes against one another and the body to strip surface dirt, labels and adhesive while removing water at the same time.
What is the difference between the Horizontal and 35D friction washers?
Both wash and dewater through friction; they differ in layout and flow direction. We can determine the type best suited to your line together.
Which materials is the friction washer suitable for?
It is used in PET, film and rigid plastic washing lines; the appropriate type and configuration are determined according to the material to be processed.
Can the friction washer replace the drying stage?
By throwing off most of the surface water it provides pre-drying and reduces the drying load; depending on the final moisture target, a separate drying stage may still be required.
Do you provide installation, spare parts and service?
Yes. We provide engineering, installation, commissioning, operator training, spare parts and ongoing technical service.
