Sink-Float Separation Tank technical drawing

What is the Sink-Float Separation Tank and what is it used for?

The sink-float separation tank agitates the flakes in a water-filled tank and separates them by density. Materials lighter than water (PE, PP) collect on the surface, while materials heavier than water (PET, PVC, metal, stone) settle to the bottom. In this way, a mixed plastic stream is separated into pure fractions.

Advantages

  • Effective separation by density (PE/PP versus PET/PVC)
  • Obtaining pure fractions from a mixed stream
  • Simple construction, low operating cost
  • Suitable for PE and PET lines

Applications

  • Cap/label (PE/PP) separation in PET bottle lines
  • Mixed plastic separation
  • Removal of heavy foreign matter (metal/stone)

Position in the line

The sink-float separation tank is the separation stage of the washing line; it separates polymers that sink in water (e.g. PET) from floating materials (e.g. PP/PE caps and labels) by density difference. It is positioned together with hot washing, particularly in PET recycling plants.
