A single-screw extruder is a machine in which plastic waste or raw material is melted and shaped through heat and mechanical pressure. With a single rotating screw, the material is conveyed, compressed and melted, and in recycling applications it sits at the final stage of the granulation line. It is widely preferred for its simple mechanical design, low maintenance requirement and broad material compatibility.
Energy efficiency: Barrier-screw geometry and optimized barrel heating reduce energy consumption per unit. Homogeneous melt flow: The screw design and L/D ratio keep the melt temperature and pressure stable. Low maintenance: Compared with twin-screw systems, mechanical complexity is lower; the screw and barrel wear parts are standard. It offers fast material changeover and a scalable structure based on screw diameter and motor power.
The extruder is only one link in the process. Upstream of it sit the shredder/crusher, granulator, washing and drying; downstream sit melt filtration and underwater / hot-face granulation. The single screw stands out for its simple material flow, low maintenance cost and broad polymer compatibility. Twin-screw systems, on the other hand, are preferred for filled compounds or those that require mixing. HDPE and LDPE can be processed on the same extruder; only the temperature profile and screw speed are adjusted to the material.
